For young people from financially disadvantaged families, limited education and unstable employment can restrict opportunities for progress. Timely financial assistance and mechanised equipment can help sanitation workers build safer, sustainable and dignified livelihoods.

Demonstrating the impact of support under the NAMASTE-Swachhta Udyami Yojana (SUY) Initiative, Kapil, a 25-year-old resident of Village Husainpur in Muradnagar, Ghaziabad District, Uttar Pradesh, progressed from working as an unpaid helper with his father to becoming an independent sanitation entrepreneur.

Kapil belongs to the Scheduled Caste (Khatik) community and comes from a financially weak family dependent on sanitation work. Due to poor economic conditions, he could continue his education only up to the 12th standard.

After completing school, Kapil began assisting his father in sewer and septic tank cleaning. Through hands-on experience, he learned the practical aspects of sanitation services, but received no fixed salary for the physically demanding work.

As the eldest son, Kapil carried major responsibilities from a young age. He helps support his parents, four sisters and three brothers. With limited resources, the household depended mainly on traditional sanitation-related work.

Financial hardship, limited higher education, unstable employment and the social stigma associated with sanitation work restricted Kapil’s prospects. Despite these barriers, he remained determined to become self-reliant and improve his family’s living conditions. Kapil aspired to establish his own enterprise with a desludging vehicle, provide safer and more efficient sanitation services and earn a stable income with dignity.

Kapil received financial assistance under the Swachhta Udyami Yojana, implemented through the NAMASTE Scheme, for purchasing a tractor fitted with a suction machine in 2023. Against a total project cost of ₹10,70,400, he received a loan of ₹6,77,800 and a capital subsidy of ₹3,92,600.

 

The assistance enabled Kapil to establish a mechanised sanitation service business. With the tractor and suction machine, he now undertakes sewer and septic tank cleaning independently and efficiently. The support has strengthened his livelihood, confidence, dignity and social recognition.

Before receiving assistance, Kapil worked as an unpaid helper and had no fixed monthly income. Today, he earns approximately ₹30,000–₹35,000 per month from mechanised sanitation work, even after meeting operational expenses and paying a monthly loan instalment of ₹14,517.

His improved income enables him to meet household expenses, maintain regular savings and provide greater financial security to his family while continuing to repay the loan and manage his enterprise.

The NAMASTE-SUY Initiative transformed Kapil’s practical experience into sustainable self-employment. Access to finance and mechanised equipment helped him move from uncertain, labour-intensive work towards safer operations and an independent livelihood. His journey from an unpaid helper to a sanitation entrepreneur reflects the potential of targeted support to promote mechanised sanitation, dignity of labour and economic empowerment. With determination and timely assistance, he is now building a more secure future for himself and his family.
