Mumbai Port Authority celebrates 12th International Day of Yoga at Gateway of India


Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal leads International Day of Yoga Celebrations in Mumbai

Mumbai Port Authority celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga with a yoga programme at the Gateway of India and simultaneous sessions across its operational areas, residential colonies, hospitals, docks and ships anchored in Mumbai Harbour. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, highlighted the importance of yoga in maintaining physical fitness, mental well-being and an active life across all age groups.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said, “Under the leadership of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the International Day of Yoga has grown into a worldwide movement for health and well-being. Mumbai Port Authority is proud to have brought together the maritime community, employees, students, security personnel and citizens for this occasion. The participation witnessed at the Gateway of India, across the port and aboard around 20 vessels in Mumbai Harbour shows the wide acceptance of yoga as part of a healthy and disciplined life.”

The participants joined the live telecast of the International Day of Yoga programme led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi from the historic Red Road in Kolkata. The Prime Minister’s address and yoga session formed a central part of the programme, with participants at the Gateway of India and other MbPA locations observing the Common Yoga Protocol.

Nearly 10,000 people participated in the programmes organised by Mumbai Port Authority. Around 4,500 to 5,000 participants attended the main event at the Gateway of India, including yoga trainers from Patanjali Yog Samiti, seafarers, NCC cadets, CISF personnel, schoolchildren, officers and employees of Mumbai Port Authority, representatives of the shipping and maritime sector and invited guests.

Around 5,000 participants joined yoga sessions organised at Jawahar Dweep, Pir Pau, the Fire Station at Tejpal Nagar, residential colonies at Mazgaon and Colaba, hospitals from various locations within the docks, and aboard ships and tugs anchored in Mumbai Harbour.

The programme was graced by Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways; Shri Kamlesh Paswan, Minister of State, Ministry of Rural Development; Shri Rahul Narwekar, Speaker, Maharashtra Legislative Assembly; Dr. Nishikant Dubey, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha; Shri Ravi Kishan, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha; Ms. Harshita Narwekar, Local Corporator, MCGM, Ward 225 and Vivek Kolhe, Member of Maharashtra legislative council.

Dr. M. Angamuthu, IAS, Chairperson, Mumbai Port Authority; Shri Adesh Titarmare, IAS, Deputy Chairperson, Mumbai Port Authority; Shri Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping, Government of India; Ms. Esha Deol, Actor and Ms. Neetu Chandra, Actor. also joined the celebrations.

The programme commenced with the National Song, “Vande Mataram”, followed by the National Anthem. Participants then joined the live telecast of the Prime Minister’s address and yoga session. Trained yoga instructors subsequently conducted the Common Yoga Protocol.

The celebration brought together people from the port, shipping and maritime community, government organisations, educational institutions and different sections of society for a shared commitment to health and well-being through yoga.
