Unit 7 of the 2 X 700 MW Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP) at Rawatbhata was successfully connected to the Northern Grid today at 02:37 hrs. This follows the completion of all necessary pre-requisites, including compliance with regulations set by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). The unit will gradually increase its power output to full capacity, in accordance with regulatory clearances, marking a significant milestone in India’s clean energy efforts.
RAPS-7 is the third reactor of 700 MW series of sixteen indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) being set up in the country.RAPP-8, its twin unit is closely following, and is expected to be operational in 2025-26. These 700 MW PHWRs have advanced safety features and are among the safest reactors in the world.
The successful grid connection of the RAPP-7, after the smooth operation of the first two 700 MW PHWRs, viz. KAPS 3&4 (2X700 MW) at Kakrapar in Gujarat, establishes the robustness of the NPCIL’s 700 MW PHWR design and the capabilities of NPCIL and the Indian industries.
The indigenous 700 MW PHWRs will constitute a significant component of the capacity of 100 GW by 2047 announced under the Nuclear Energy Mission by the Government. A typical 700 MW reactor would generate about 5.2 Billion Units of clean electricity (at 85% Plant Load Factor) per annum thereby averting about 4.5 million tons of CO2 equivalent emissions annually.
Rawatbhata site in Rajasthan already has six units with a total capacity of 1180 MW. On completion of RAPP 7&8, the installed capacity at the site will increase to 2580 MW.
With this, NPCIL now operates 25 reactors with a total capacity of 8880 MW. In addition to 13100 MW capacity under implementation, more reactors are also planned to be launched by NPCIL in future, in its effort to contribute about half of the 100 GW nuclear power capacity by 2047 announced in the Nuclear Energy Mission.
