Inauguration of Innovation & Development Centre (IDC) of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, and Hemavathi Hostel, Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences, Bengaluru

Innovation & Development Centre of JNCASR and Hemavathi Hostel of CeNS will be inaugurated by Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary to Govt. of India, Department of Science and Technology in the presence of Bharat Ratna Prof. C.N.R. Rao, Prof. Ramgopal Rao, Chairperson, Council of Management, JNCASR and Prof. K.N. Ganesh, Chairperson, Governing Council, CeNS. Prof. B.L.V. Prasad, Director, CeNS, and Prof. G.U. Kulkarni, President, JNCASR will also be present during the occasion on the dias. Prof. Karandikar and other dignitaries on the dias will address the gathering. On this occasion, Tech Translation - a Poster Exhibition & Interaction with Industry will be held at IDC.

About Innovation & Development Centre (IDC), JNCASR

The Innovation & Development Centre established by Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) an autonomous Institute (Deemed to be University under UGC), under DST, will host laboratories to take inventions forward for scale-up and technology transfer. Start-ups from inventors from JNCASR, and other institutions in Bengaluru and across the country will also be hosted in this new facility. Scientists will be provided with state-of-the-art processing and prototyping tools to enable the translation of inventions. IDC aims to become a major facilitator in taking science to society and meeting the Country’s missions of “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”. It has been set in the 1-acre land earmarked in Shivanapura, Bengaluru for IDC and for setting up CeNS campus in approximately 13 acres land.

About Hemavathi Hostel, CeNS

The Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), an autonomous research institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India has built the “Hemavathi” hostel for the students pursuing Ph.D. in the Institute. The Hemavathi hostel can accommodate an overall of 48 students. The hostel is fully furnished for usage by students and has state-of-art facilities like gym, recreation, badminton court, pantry and so on.

About JNCASR

Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), an autonomous institution under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India has completed 31 years since its inception in 1989. Through the initiatives of DST, the Centre was set up to commemorate the birth centenary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru with an aim to create a world-class research institute that focuses on higher education and advanced interdisciplinary research. In the year 2002, the Centre also obtained the status of an Institution Deemed-to- be-University. Based on the success and impact of the Centre on the scientific community in India, it was graded as category-I Deemed-to- be-University, giving it benefits stipulated under clause-4 (Dimensions of Autonomy for Category-I Universities) of UGC Regulations. JNCASR is among the top institutions not only in India but also at the international level. In the country’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), 2017, the Centre was ranked 4th among Universities and 11th under the Overall category. The Centre was placed as a Special Mention Institution by NIRF in 2018, 19th in 2021 and 30th in 2023 under the Research category.

The Centre offers various degree programmes including Ph.D., M.S. (Engineering), M.S.(Research), Integrated Ph.D. Programmes, Masters Programme in Chemistry, Masters Programme in Inter-Disciplinary Biosciences, Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Materials Science. As of 31st March 2024, the total student strength of the Centre was recorded to be 373 across all academic programmes.

About CeNS

The Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS) is an autonomous research institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. DST provides core support to the Centre in the form of a grant-in-aid for conducting basic and applied research in nano and soft matter sciences. CeNS is located in its new campus, 'Arkavathi' at Shivanapura, Bengaluru North, which hosts ample greenery and has a lovely serene space that would inspire new ideas and leading to path-breaking scientific achievements.

The Centre is engaged in materials research at all relevant length scales. Specifically, the current activities are focused on a variety of metal and semiconductor nanostructures, liquid crystals, gels, membranes and hybrid materials. It has close interactions with many Institutions and Industry, in India and abroad.
