Bureau of Indian Standards Conducts Enforcement Raid on Jewellery Shop for Manufacturing, Storing and Selling without BIS Hallmark and Marking on Gold Jewellery

Quickly acting on information received regarding violation of Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020, a team of officials from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Mumbai Branch Office-II, conducted an Enforcement raid on 04th July 2024, at M/s. Shree Darshan Jewellers, Ground floor, Shop No.-4, Station Road, Bhayandar (W), Dist-Thane, Maharashtra - 401101. During the raid it was found that the Jewellary Shop was manufacturing, storing and selling without BIS hallmark and marking on gold jewellery/articles with old scheme of four marks. Substantial quantity of such Gold jewellery, without BIS hallmark & marking on gold jewellery/articles with old scheme of four marks found during the raid were seized, as Section 17(1) (a) of BIS Act 2016 had been violated.

The violation of Section 17(1)(a) of BIS Act 2016 is punishable with imprisonment up to two years or a fine of minimum Rs. 2,00,000 or both as per BIS Act 2016. Action is being initiated to file a case in the court of law for the offence.

As per BIS Act, 2016, No person shall manufacture, import, distribute, sell, hire, lease, store or exhibit for sale any such goods which is covered under Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020 without BIS hallmark, except under a valid licence. Citizens are requested that in case they come across any instance where mandatory products are being sold without BIS certification, or where misuse of ISI Mark on any product is happening, the same may be informed to the Head, MUBO-II, Western Regional Office, BIS, 5th Floor, CETTM complex, Hiranandani Gardens, Powai, Mumbai - 400076. Such complaints can also be made by E-mail at the address hmubo2@bis.gov.in. The source of such information will be kept confidential.
