Eastern Railway (ER) has recorded over 25 % increment in cumulative freight loading and earning in the first quarter of the current fiscal. The total freight loading during April to June 2024 recorded 25.36 million tonnes compared to 20.277 million tonnes during corresponding period of previous financial year. The freight earnings of ER in the first quarter of the current fiscal recorded Rs 2290.55 crore compared to Rs. 1820.05 crore earned during the first three months of the previous financial year.

The main constituent of ER’s freight basket which showed remarkable growth during this period is coal, iron ore and foodgrains. The increment in loading of coal during the first quarter of the current financial year i.e. April – June 2024 recorded as 33.66 % and similarly the growth in loading figure recorded as 5.6 % for iron ore & 47.45 % for foodgrains.

In the last month i.e. June 2024 also the same pace of growth in freight loading and earning observed over ER. The freight loading over ER for the month of June 2024 recorded 8.385 million tonnes compared to a loading of 6.734 million tonnes in June 2023. The freight earning of ER for the month of June 2024 also increased to Rs. 739.824 crore compared to Rs. 593.404 crore during the corresponding month of previous financial year.

ER though popularly known as passenger carrying railway is now marching ahead to achieve excellence in freight loading  with considerable increase in share of bulk carriage of eastern region in respect of transporting industrial input and other essential commodities.
