EASTERN RAILWAY SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES EXTENSION OF PLATFORMS 1 TO 5 AT SEALDAH STATION

Commissioning of the extended length of platform no. 1 to 5 of Sealdah Station had been done on war footing to accommodate 12-coach EMU locals giving a facelift to the suburban transport system of Kolkata with provision of more sitting arrangements during peak hours. The task was completed two hours before the schedule as well coordinated activities of different departments of Eastern Railway (ER) with minimal disturbance to the existing suburban services.
The salient features of the work for extension of Platforms 1 to 5 out of the 21 Platforms at Sealdah Station along with the commissioning of Electronic Interlocking as a replacement of RRI are as follows :
• Block of PF 1 to 5 was taken from 7/6/24 to 9/6/24 and NI of Sealdah station yard for 36 hours from 8/6/24 to 9/6/24.
• Yard remodelling and OHE works were carried out to create space for extension.
• Major civil work of PF extension completed and balance would be over by June end.
• Around 500 staff worked round the clock with sufficient resources.
• Electronic Interlocking commissioned with 449 routes controlling 65 point machines, 27 main signals, MSDAC with 15 DPs for dual detection at Bridge portion, 77 DC track circuits for the entire yard.
• Despite being one of the busiest stations and with NI working, the Division succeeded in running over 800 Suburban Services with 147 short terminations.
• No reserved Mail/Express trains were cancelled.
• Close liasioning with the West Bengal Transport Department and the Kolkata Metro was done to ensure additional buses/Metro on feeder routes to Kolkata.
The mammoth work was accomplished with the support and guidance of the General Manager, ER, Additional General Manager, Principal Chief Operations Manager, Principal Chief Signal & Telecom Engineer and other Principal Officers of ER. The Sealdah Divisional Team & GSU team worked in tandem in the last three days (also nights) despite hostile weather which was extremely hot and humid, stated the ER authority today.
