Mumbai, May 25, 2024 -

A three-week residential program 'Vigyan Vidushi' is organized by Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TAFR, Colaba) and Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (Mankhurd, Mumbai) at Homi Bhabha Center from 27th May to 15th June 24  for Physics ( M.Sc.)female students.

The Vigyan Vidushi 2024 (Physics) programme will be inaugurated in the V G Kulkarni Auditorium, HBCSE-TIFR, V N Punav Marg, Mankhurd – 400088, on Monday 27 May 2024 at 9:30 am.

“I am a girl really interested in physics.  But I am not sure if I want to go for a Ph.D. in physics. Will I be able to do research? How do I start? Where do I find others in the same situation? Will I be able to meet role models who have done it and succeeded?”

For all girls in M.Sc. physics who face this question, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), through its Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), has started a three-week summer programme “Vigyan Vidushi” since 2020. This is the first year the programme will be completely in the residential mode, at HBSCE, during 27 May to 15 June, 2024.

46  women students from all over India, who have just completed their first year MSc in physics, will attend this programme that will give them an exposure to advanced physics courses and encourage them to perform innovative experiments. Additionally, there will be sessions on thinking through problem-solving and career guidance about research opportunities. They will visit research laboratories at TIFR, Colaba, and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) near Pune. They will be taught, inspired and mentored by successful women scientist role models.

The participants are selected from a large number of applications received from all over the country on the basis of academic profiles and recommendation letters. These students come from all over India, from Goa to Tripura and from Haryana to Kerala.

This is a unique initiative of TIFR to partially address the gender balance in physics at the doctorate level. For further information, please visit the website https://vv.hbcse.tifr.res.in/
