All five Indian students at the 53rd International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2023, held in Tokyo, Japan from July 10 to July 17, 2023 performed exceptionally and won medals.

The medal won are as follows -

Aditya (GOLD) from Pitampura, Delhi

Dhruv Shah (GOLD) from Pune Maharashtra

Mehul Borad (GOLD) from Kachiguda, Telangana

Raghav Goyal (SILVER) from Chandigarh

Rhythm Kedia (SILVER) from Raipur, Chhattisgarh

The team was led by two leaders - Prof. Arun V. Kulkarni (Professor, BITS Pilani, Goa), Dr Shirish Pathare (HBCSE, TIFR), and two Scientific Observers: Prof. Anwesh Mazumdar (HBCSE, Mumbai), Dr Leena Joshi (St Xaviers' College, Mumbai).

In the country-wise medals tally, India was placed at the fifth position, jointly with Romania and Taiwan.

China, South Korea and the contingent of 5 Russian students competing under the IPhO flag came at the top with 5 gold medals, followed by the USA with 4 golds and 1 silver.

In all, 37 gold, 74 silver, and 103 bronze medals were awarded. A total of 387 students from 82 countries participated in the competition.

The Physics Olympiad cell and the resource pool of external teachers and mentors trained the students during the orientation and pre-departure camps at HBCSE.

The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education - TIFR is the nodal Centre for training and selecting the students for the International Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy &

Astrophysics. The final team is selected through various stages of the National Olympiad Examination conducted by HBCSE (details on https://olympiads.hbcse.tifr.res.in )
