WOMEN’s SAFETY

On the question on ‘Women’s Safety’ in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Ajay Kumar Mishra stated the following in a written reply today.
‘Police’ and ‘Public Order’ are State subjects under the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India. The responsibilities to maintain law and order, protection of life and property of the citizens including women rest with the respective State Governments. However, in order to augment the capacity of States in the domain of investigation of heinous crime against women, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had implemented scheme for assisting States/Union Territories to set up 150 Investigative Units for Crime against Women in districts for a period of two years (2015-16 and 2016-17) with a 50:50 cost sharing basis with the States/ Union Territories. An amount of Rs. 28 lakhs was allocated to each unit by Central Government. State/UT wise units allocated is given below:

Details of such units established by the States/ Union Territories are not maintained centrally. The Ministry is now implementing a Scheme to assist States/UTs to set up Women Help Desks in all Police Stations. As per information available, Women Help Desks have been set up in 13,101 Police Stations.
