Use of Recycled Steel in the Country

Posted On: 06 FEB 2023 9:00PM by PIB Delhi

Currently the total volume of recycled steel in the country is approximately 30 Million Tonnes (MT). Recycled steel is predominately used in construction, automobile and infrastructure sectors.

The list of companies that produce recycled steel in India is not maintained centrally.  However, most of the steel producers are utilizing steel scrap as inputs to produce steel.

Steel Scrap Recycling Policy, 2019 envisages establishment of scrap recycling centres for recycling of ferrous scrap in scientific and environmentally sound manner.  These centres have to adhere to all environmental statutes or any other relevant guidelines issued by the Government [Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC)], Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) or any other Statutory Body from time-to-time to address environmental hazards.

Government of India has notified the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) [HOWM] Rules, 2016 to ensure safe storage, treatment and disposal of hazardous and other wastes in an environmentally sound manner without causing adverse effect to environment and human health.

This information was given by the Union Minister of State for Steel and Rural Development, Shri Faggan Singh Kulaste, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
