Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai Zonal Unit seized 665 animals of many exotic species in an import consignment from Air Cargo Complex, Mumbai. This is one of the biggest seizures of rare and exotic wildlife species in Mumbai, informed DRI.

A large number of exotic species such as pythons, lizards, turtles, and iguanas were found concealed in the cartons containing fish. The importer and the person to whom he was supposed to make the delivery have been arrested. Further investigation is under progress said DRI.

Based on intelligence input, the Mumbai Zonal Unit of the DRI intercepted the consignment on 6 October after it arrived at the Air Cargo Complex. On thorough examination in presence of officers of the Forest Department and Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, a large numbers of exotic species such as pythons, lizards, turtles, iguanas etc were found concealed in the cartons containing fish.

The import of such species, listed under appendices to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), is banned. Since the animals were sought to be smuggled in the country, they were seized under the provisions of Customs Act read with the Foreign Trade Development (Regulation) Act.
