The 7th International Day of Yoga has been marked by a yoga demonstration session attended by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) at the historic Old High Building in Nagpur today. The Archeological Society of India (ASI)’s Nagpur Circle had organized the event following all COVID-19 guidelines and related SOPs with a small group of yoga enthusiasts consisting of ASI officials and staff members. The theme of International Day of Yoga this year – “Yoga for well- being” was central to the yoga asanas demonstrated on the occasion. Psycho-social care has a significant role to play in yoga during the time of the pandemic.

The aim of celebrating the Yoga Day in a monumental premise is to create awareness among the people for tangible and intangible Heritage. The Union Culture Ministry is celebrating International Day of Yoga – 2021 at 75 places in the country under the campaign “Azadi ka AmritMahotsav- Yoga an Indian Heritage” linking the celebration of 75 years of India’s Independence. Out of these places four sites in Maharashtra have been selected for the campaign namely Kanheri Caves, Mumbai; Aga Khan Palace, Pune; Old High Court Building, Nagpur and the World Heritage site Ellora caves, Aurangabad. All these four sites are centrally protected monuments of National Importance under Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

As yoga is inextricably linked to Indian heritage, a cultural programme was also organized by Nagpur-headquartered South Central Zone Cultural Centre (SCZCC) to celebrate the day in a befitting manner. Maharashtra’s traditional martial arts Mallakhamba and Dandpatta were performed by the group of Dr. Sambhaji Bhosle and Shri Rahul Dhamik on the occasion.

A sapling was also planted by Shri Gadkari on the occasion. The dignitaries who attended the programme included Regional Director of ASI Western Region Smt.Nandini Sahu, Superintending Archaeologist of Nagpur Circle Shri K.R.K.Reddy among others.
