International Day of the Seafarer: Braving Waves to Connect the World

The International day for the Seafarers is observed on June 25 with an aim to acknowledge and appreciate the exceptional contribution made by seafarers worldwide to international maritime trade, the global economy, and society as a whole.

Seafarers are crucial to global trade, ensuring the economy runs smoothly and delivering the goods and fuels we rely on. The International Day of the Seafarer serves as an opportunity to recognize and pay tribute to their unique contributions to public well-being. For 2024, the campaign will look at seafarers' contribution to making the maritime sector a safer workplace.

Background

The Day of the Seafarer was established in a resolution adopted by the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila to adopt the revised International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). Its stated purpose is to recognize the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole.

The resolution "encourages Governments, shipping organizations, companies, shipowners and all other parties concerned to duly and appropriately promote the Day of the Seafarer and take action to celebrate it meaningfully". Day of the Seafarer is recognized by the United Nations as an observance day. [1]

Focus of 2024 Campaign: Recognizing Seafarers’ Role in Ensuring Maritime Safety

In 2023, the campaign highlighted seafarers' contributions in protecting the marine environment, while in 2024, the focus will shift to their efforts in enhancing safety in the maritime sector. #SafetyTipsAtSea is the hashtag for the campaign and the seafarers were requested to share a picture of themselves in their working environment with their top tip for safety at sea along with the same hashtag.
