Repairing of Breached Embankments
There are information’s of breach of levee of rivers, drain and service water channels of dams due to excessive rain in the monsoon in several States of the country this year. The Saran embankment on river Gandak in Gopalganj district of Bihar, Yamuna embankment near Panipat in Haryana, Ghaghar embankment in Punjab and Tungabhadra canal in Karnataka has been reported to have been breached during this year.

Senior officers of Ganga Flood Control Commission under the Ministry of Water Resources had inspected the breached portion of Saran Embankment on river Gandak in Bihar. Flood management being State subject, flood control and management schemes are planned, formulated and implemented by the concerned State Governments. Thus, the responsibility of preparation of estimates for repair and restoration of embankments lies with the concerned State Governments. No requests were received from any of the three States for funds for undertaking repair of breached embankment.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Water Resources, Shri Vincent H. Pala in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
