Setting up of New Central Universities
The Central Universities Act, 2009 for establishment of one new Central University in each of the States of Punjab, Kerala, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Orissa, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu and conversion of three State Universities, namely, Dr. Harsingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Sagar, Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur and Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna, Garhwal University, Srinagar in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand, respectively, came into force on 15.1.2009. By an amendment to the said Act, a second University in the State of Jammu and Kashmir has since been established by the Central Universities Act, 2009.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Smt. D. Purandeswari, in written reply to a question, in the Rajya Sabha today.
