Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) at Gandhinagar has taken another important lead, this time in setting up a Remote Pilot Training Centre for imparting drone flying skills to security force personnel and citizens at its campus. This initiative is in accordance with the stated mission of the University, viz., to identify, prepare and sustain statecraft of national strategic and security culture through continuous enhancement and development of educational, research and training cadres from the security, police and civilian society.

The University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with M/S DroneAcharya Aerial Innovations, a well-established company that has all the necessary credentials to collaborate with Rashtriya Raksha University and set up the Remote Pilot Training Centre (RPTC) under a private partnership model. The training is primarily designed for personnel of armed forces, para military forces and police force but also offers programs for citizens willing to acquire the skill. At this RPTC, trainers certified by the Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA) will impart training on flying quad-copters categories of drones. The fee structure for various categories of trainees has been kept well below the existing market rates for such training.

In an eye-catching display witnessed by guests from Indian Army, Gujarat Police and RRU faculty the trainers impressed everyone with the capabilities of rotary and fixed wing types of drones. There were a large number of School children from local Schools who enjoyed the immersive performance.

The DGCA has laid down a five days training schedule for imparting the basic training in Drone flying. However, the training at Rashtriya Raksha University will be conducted on a 5 plus 2 to 4 day basis. While the first five days are meant for basic training module, the additional period will be to impart specialised GIS based training on use of various sensors onboard a UAV (optical, thermal, infra-red etc) to capture georeferenced data having real world use, customised to the requirement of specific client. The requirement of Defence, Police, Agriculture, Power, Irrigation, Town Planning sectors etc vary greatly and therefore the add-on module will be customised for each.

While interacting with the Media-persons, Dr Bimal Patel, Vice Chancellor reiterated the resolve expressed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to make India a global drone hub, while inaugurating the two-day Drone Festival of India 2022 in New Delhi on 27 May 22. He quoted the Prime Minister’s statement, “The enthusiasm we are seeing in drone technology in India is amazing. This energy is an indicator of the huge leap in drones-as-a-service and drone dependent industries. It also reflects the emergence of a potential employment generating sector in the country.” Dr Patel asserted that Rashtriya Raksha University was committed to such initiatives as part of its basic Mission.
